X-ray is the most relied-upon imaging modality, accounting for approximately 60% of imaging procedures in hospitals. That’s why it’s important for you to be able to do more with your X-ray equipment. Universal Poly-positional X-ray System (UPPXS), designed by Alexander Zhukovsky for NIPK ELECTRON, is the most flexible, modern, and innovative radiography equipment currently produced in the Russian Federation. This multi-purpose X-ray diagnostic system is intended to provide X-ray studies or surgical operations under X-ray control.
UPPXS – universal and fully automated X-ray diagnostic system with a multifunctional turntable-stand for polypositional studies. This is a radically new instrument for X-ray diagnostics that has no analogues in the world and opens up maximum functionality for users.
This system allows for any kind of X-ray studies in almost every known patient positioning. Universal Poly-positional X-ray System is used in such fields of medicine as oncology, physiology, pediatrics, traumatology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, and many others.
The experience of creating industrial design objects of such scale was unforgettable. This is one of the most complex designs in the field of medical equipment I’ve done so far. However, the complexity of the design is not merely in the external appearance of the object – design development was just one piece of a complex process of creation and I was just one member of a large development team. Ultimately, it was really inspiring to create a design for something as large-scale and as impactful as Universal Poly-positional X-ray System from scratch.
During the development of this X-ray system, we worked out a number of small projects as diverse as a graphic design, industrial design, information design, and product design. We designed a set of icons for x-ray system controls, a few interfaces, and a lot of additional equipment for patient support.
While the main goal of the project was to develop a system which can provide X-ray studies in the widest possible range of patient positioning (standing, lying, sitting, etc), my aim as an industrial designer was to make this multifunctional X-ray equipment as beautiful and user-friendly as possible. UPPXS should be easy to use for both doctors and patients (including patients with disabilities).
The design of this multifunctional X-ray system was developed as part of NIPK ELECTRON team. The core of the team are: Sergey Chugunov (engineering), Igor Nifontov (developer of control system), Eugeny Maximchik (system components integration), Alexander Zhukovsky (industrial design, infographics), and Yury Veip (project manager).

This X-ray diagnostic complex is superior to any other device on the market due to a unique combination of possibilities. The developed system provides X-ray studies in almost all existing positions, giving the physician access to the patient from virtually any side. UPPXS also has the capacity to work with patients weighing up to 250 kg. Additionally, the system’s X-ray equipment provides excellent diagnostic image quality.
